--------------------------------------------------------------- 4. ANNOUNCEMENT FOR THE 5TH SOHO WORKSHOP: THE CORONA AND SOLAR WIND NEAR MINIMUM ACTIVITY --------------------------------------------------------------- From: Olav Kjeldseth-Moe (olav.kjeldseth-moe@astro.uio.no) 5th SOHO WORKSHOP: THE CORONA AND SOLAR WIND NEAR MINIMUM ACTIVITY 17-20 June 1997 (PLEASE NOTE: REVISED DATES) Institute of Theoretical Astrophysics, University of Oslo, Oslo GENERAL INFORMATION After one year of SOHO operation, the SOHO Science Working Team would like to review the impact of SOHO observations on solar physics. The 5th SOHO workshop will concentrate on processes and phenomena in the solar atmosphere and solar wind. Together the coronal and particle instruments on SOHO offer a comprehensive approach to investigations of these phenomena which is furthermore extended by frequent collaborations with ground based observatories, Yohkoh, and other spacecraft. Reviewing the results obtained so far will present the user community with input to shape the future program of SOHO science. Proposed themes include: - Structures, features and dynamics of the solar transition region and corona at minimum activity, including slow solar wind - Coronal holes and the high speed solar wind - Photospheric magnetic elements and their coronal manifestations - "Quiet Sun" features: Network, bright-points, explosive events, other The themes may be adjusted based on the submittals of the participants. Presentations covering investigations with the relevant SOHO instruments, observations and theoretical interpretation, are welcome. The workshop will have oral talks in plenum, invited and contributed, and poster presentations. Time will furthermore be allocated to parallel workshop sessions, to discuss the scientific subjects and on-going and future investigations. Reports from the working groups will be presented in a closing plenary session It should be noted that the contributions of SOHO to helioseismology will be reviewed at the 6th SOHO Workshop, held later at a different location. DEDICATION OF THE MEETING The 5th SOHO Workshop will be dedicated to Bruce Patchett who died September 12 1996. The solar physics community owes much to Bruce, who was one of the original proposers of SOHO and participated in the Phase A study team. He was Principal Investigator for CDS from its inception until 1992, and guided the instrument through selection and design stages. Since 1992 he was active in a leadership position in the commercial arm of RAL.
